You just never know what you will turn up, especially armed with a bit of natural curiosity and a willingness to venture off the beaten path. One of my most pleasing memories of India occurred when I wandered into the Museum of Kangra Art in Lower Dharamsala a couple of months ago. I almost missed seeing the two artists in a small studio to the left of the main entrance. They were bent intently over their work and not easily distracted. I had stumbled upon the Chitera School, a unique project designed to revive and promote the local Kangra tradition of painting. I was immediately drawn to the jewel-like miniature paintings that were being created by the artists. The vibrant colors popped off the canvas, and the meticulous detail invited a closer look.
